AI search visibility decides whether your name comes up when a customer asks an AI tool for a recommendation. Someone in Kochi asks an AI assistant for a good interior designer nearby. Three names come back. Is yours one of them? Most owners have no idea.
Your usual reports don't show AI visibility. Rankings can look healthy while ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews recommend someone else, often to people who never click through. Your AI brand visibility can shift without any change in your traffic report.
The good news is that you can measure it for free, in about 30 minutes a month. Here's how.
- Track five numbers: visibility rate, AI citations, share of voice, AI impressions and AI referral traffic.
- Use free tools: Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, Bing Webmaster Tools and a simple spreadsheet.
- Follow a 30-minute monthly routine: test the same 20 to 30 questions and compare yourself with three competitors.
What Is AI Search Visibility?
AI search visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI tools mention or link to your business when people ask questions about the products or services you offer. Think of it as your "share of the answer" rather than your position on a results page.
Mentions vs Citations
A mention is when the AI names your business in its answer, with or without a link. A citation is when it links to or references a page on your website as a source. Mentions shape what people think of you. Citations can send traffic. Counting only one gives you half the picture. You'll also hear this called "LLM visibility", after the large language models behind these tools.
Which AI Search Platforms Should You Track?
You don't need to track every AI tool on day one.
| Platform | Why it matters | How to measure it |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | One of the most widely used AI assistants | Your prompt sheet and GA4 referrals |
| Google AI Overviews | Appears above normal Google results for many searches | Search Console's generative AI report |
| Google AI Mode | Google's conversational search experience | Search Console's generative AI report and your prompt sheet |
| Google Gemini | Built into Android phones and Google apps | Your prompt sheet and GA4 referrals |
| Perplexity | Shows its sources clearly, so citations are easy to spot | Your prompt sheet and GA4 referrals |
| Microsoft Copilot | Built into Windows, Edge and Bing | Bing Webmaster Tools and your prompt sheet |
| Claude | Popular for research and work tasks | Your prompt sheet |
For most businesses in Kerala and across India, start with ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini. Google's features appear in searches people already make daily, and ChatGPT is the assistant most customers have tried. Add the others later.
Why Website Traffic Alone Misleads You
Many searches now end without a click. These are called zero-click searches: someone reads the AI-generated answer, gets what they need and moves on.
Say an AI tool recommends your clinic. The person doesn't click. Two days later, they search your name and book. Analytics records a "direct" or "branded search" visit, and the AI answer gets no credit.
Not every mention leads to a visit, but organic traffic alone can undercount your reach. You need a separate set of AI metrics.
5 AI Metrics to Track
Two of these come from official platform reports; the rest come from your own testing.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where to get it | Platforms covered | Free? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visibility rate | The percentage of your test questions where you're mentioned | Your prompt sheet | Any platform you test | Yes |
| AI citations | How often your website is linked as a source | Your prompt sheet and Bing Webmaster Tools | Any platform you test; Copilot via Bing | Yes |
| Share of voice | Your mentions compared with your competitors' mentions | Your prompt sheet | Any platform you test | Yes |
| AI impressions | How often your pages appear in Google's AI features | Search Console's generative AI report | AI Overviews and AI Mode | Yes |
| AI referral traffic | Visits that arrive from AI assistants | GA4 | Assistants that pass referral data | Yes |
Visibility rate is your headline number. If you test 20 questions and appear in 6 answers, your rate is 30%. Many tools call this your AI visibility score.
AI citations show which pages the AI trusts. Citation tracking often reveals a surprise: the AI may be quoting your Google Business Profile or a directory listing instead of your own website. Watch citation frequency to see if your own pages gain ground.
Share of voice adds context. Appearing in 30% of answers sounds fine until a competitor appears in 70%.
AI impressions come straight from Google, making them the most reliable number here, though they only cover Google's AI features.
AI referral traffic counts visits from AI tools. Treat it as a minimum, since some arrive without referral information.
Also check accuracy. While you're recording results, note whether the AI gets your prices, opening hours, location and services right. It isn't an official metric, but a wrong answer can cost more than no answer.
How to Measure AI Search Visibility in 6 Steps
1. Make Sure AI Crawlers Can Reach Your Site
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and make sure you aren't accidentally blocking AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. A Google-Extended rule affects Gemini's use of your content, not AI Overviews or AI Mode, which rely on normal Googlebot crawling. Allowing a crawler doesn't guarantee visibility, but blocking one can rule you out. Our technical SEO guide explains the basics.
2. Build a Prompt Set of 20 to 30 Questions
List the questions customers would actually ask an AI tool. Mix five types:
- Category: "best dental clinic in Kakkanad"
- Comparison: "[your brand] vs [competitor] for wedding photography"
- Price: "how much does a website cost for a small business in Kerala"
- Local problem: "how do I get more bookings for my homestay in Munnar"
- Branded: "is [your brand] good for kitchen interiors"
This list is the foundation of your prompt tracking, so keep it fixed; edited questions make months impossible to compare. Our guide to how query fan-out works shows why a mix of question types matters.
3. Run Each Prompt Three Times on Every Platform
AI answers change from one run to the next. In its research, AirOps found that only 30% of brands stayed visible from one AI answer to the next.
So run each question on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Three runs is a manageable number for a small business, not an industry standard; just stay consistent. Use a private window, keep your location where your customers are, and record every result in a spreadsheet. This routine is the core of AI visibility tracking.
4. Check the Search Console AI Report
Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report, available to all sites since August 31, 2026, alongside your other Performance reports.
It shows how often links to your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date. It shows impressions, not clicks, and an impression only means your link appeared, not that anyone read it. Low-traffic sites may see little data.
5. Set Up AI Referral Traffic in GA4
In Google Analytics 4, go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and set the main dimension to "Session default channel group". If your property shows an AI Assistant channel, that's where visits from AI tools are grouped.
Also create a custom channel group for sources like chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. Even then, AI referral traffic stays incomplete, because apps often strip the referrer and visits land in "direct".
6. Calculate Your Monthly AI Visibility Score
Each month, use this formula:
Visibility rate = (prompts where your business is mentioned ÷ total prompts) × 100
Do the same for three competitors you actually lose customers to, using the same questions. Your score only means something next to theirs. Note that this AI visibility score is a practical framework, not an official Google metric or ranking score.

Free AI Visibility Checkers and Tools
You can do everything above with free tools: Google Search Console, GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools, which has its own AI Performance report showing how often Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers cite your site.
Several SEO platforms also offer a free AI visibility checker that gives a quick snapshot of where your brand appears. They're useful for a first look, but most limit how many questions you can test, so don't treat them as your main report.
Paid AI visibility tools make sense once you track more than 50 questions, several locations or brands, or need automated monitoring for a team. Before paying, ask how often they run each question and how they define a citation.
Example: A Kerala Business's Monthly AI Visibility Report
Here's a simple one-page report for a dental clinic in Kochi.
Sample data: these figures are hypothetical, not real client or Bamboost results.
| Metric (sample) | September | October |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility rate (20 questions) | 15% | 25% |
| AI citations of the clinic's own website | 2 | 5 |
| Share of voice vs 2 competitors | 18% | 27% |
| AI impressions (Search Console) | 140 | 260 |
| AI referral sessions (GA4) | 9 | 17 |
The next step is clear from the table. The clinic appears more often, but in this example competitors still lead on price questions. A clear fees page would be the next move.
How to Link AI Visibility to Leads and Revenue
AI visibility is a leading indicator. You can't prove direct cause and effect, but three checks help you spot the connection:
- Branded search volume: if more people discover you through AI tools, more of them may search for your name. Watch this trend in Search Console.
- Ask your customers: add "ChatGPT / AI assistant" as an option in your "How did you hear about us?" question on forms and at the front desk.
- Google Business Profile: track calls, direction requests and resulting leads. Local AI answers often draw on business profiles; see our guide on ranking higher on Google Maps.
5 Common Mistakes
- Judging your visibility from a single screenshot
- Changing your question list every month
- Counting mentions but ignoring citations, or the other way round
- Measuring yourself without comparing against competitors
- Treating GA4's AI traffic figure as the complete total
